Dads & Lads is a voluntary mentoring organisation founded in 2001 in the London
borough of Newham, which has one of the country's most culturally diverse
populations.
The Dads & Lads value statement is: education through recreation in order
'To enhance the lives of children, young adults and their families at grassroots level by
providing healthy recreational activities and services that address their needs and
aspirations.'
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the organisation.
Dads & Lads initially aimed to encourage fathers to become more involved in their
sons' development through mutually enjoyable activities such as football, although
mothers have always been actively involved as well.
However, our scope is extending to offer workshops on a variety of issues such as
bullying, self esteem, nutrition and peer pressure for children, young adults and their
families. Now, over 90 children and young adults from east London and Essex are
actively involved with us through its football club, Newham Warriors.
In order to improve the facilities, equipment and support currently provided by Dads &
Lads and to professionalise our sports training, funding plays a major part in our
continued development. In May of this year, Dads & Lads received a significant gift
from the Swan Foundation.
Swan Foundation is a charity dedicated to improving people's lives. They build
partnerships with businesses to invest in communities and turn aspirations into
reality. The Foundation has been set up to improve the quality of life for people in
disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
We hope that our activities will contribute to reducing anti-social behaviour and
increase community participation because at-risk youngsters will realise their
learning and citizenship potential in a controlled, supportive environment.
Ultimately, we want to ensure that talented people do not feel they have to go outside
Newham to find the support and facilities that will help them to realise their dreams.
We have held and would like to hold more workshops that tackle a range of issues in
addition to those previously mentioned including how to avoid knife/gun crime.
We would expect to link with schools and local agencies in this provision.
Last year summer, Dads & Lads was featured on BBC4 for a documentary called
The Biology of Dads which was part of their fatherhood season. Also that summer,
we were featured on the Community Channel as a result of the work we do in the
community.
